Feeling limited by the constraints of traditional 2D construction drawings, Randolph Warnaar saw an opportunity to innovate, using advanced 3D digital modeling to support his projects. This led to the creation of FabStation in Victoria, B.C.

FabStation’s mission is to empower steel fabricators with innovative augmented reality technology, improving accuracy, reducing errors, and elevating their craftsmanship.

Randolph recognized that it was not just Canadian construction professionals who would benefit from this technology, but that 3D modelling could revolutionize processes across many sectors worldwide. He began to explore exporting beyond Canada into the US, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. With his sights set on global expansion, Randolph was challenged by extensive travel distances and the difficulty of introducing new, cutting-edge technologies to an unfamiliar market.

Through working with Export Navigator, FabStation has now grown from 15 to 130 clients, with an increased revenue of 800%. Randolph has found the guidance and funding necessary to support live demonstrations in his target markets. With endless potential and applications for his technology, this is just the beginning for FabStation.

Scaling challenges

Randolph’s journey with Export Navigator began when export advisor Jason Seed reached out directly, piquing his interest in the program. Impressed by Jason’s proactive approach and wealth of knowledge, Randolph quickly recognized the potential benefits of working with an export expert.

Jason facilitated crucial industry introductions, including the provincial Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. This led to connections with potential clients in markets like Taiwan that Randolph hadn’t previously considered.

“There are so many things to navigate to get a fledgling business off the ground that it is hard to have all the internal expertise to do it,” Randolph says. “We are still in the early days of our relationship, but we have already seen tangible benefits.”

Jason helped Randolph find the tools he needed to support his company’s growth, guiding the business through CanExport SME applications, which will enable them to attend key industry trade shows and conferences. For FabStation to successfully sell their products, the best strategy is to get it into the hands of as many people as possible through demos and site visits.

Rapid growth and global ambitions

In less than a year, FabStation’s sales soared as the business grew from 15 clients to over 130, with revenue increasing by 800%. To support this growth, FabStation has expanded its team to include a new Customer Success Manager, Account Manager and Sales Manager.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for FabStation. With clients across Canada and the US, Randolph is now ready for global expansion.

When you first start out on your journey as an entrepreneur, there is a lot to learn. Initially, you think that if you hire the right team and create the product, the rest will write itself.  That’s far from the truth,” notes Randolph.

Thanks to Export Navigator, Randolph has the resources he needs to take his business to the next level, and a dedicated export advisor to advocate for him every step of the way.

“It’s essential to build a strong team of external mentors that can fill in the gaps. Export Navigator is an important part of that team and crucial if you want to sell outside of Canada,” says Randolph. “I 100% recommend the services of Export Navigator to help accelerate sales in markets you only wish you were selling to today.”
